Breaking: Syria calls on Security Council to take firm action against Israeli aggression
Syria has called on the UN Security Council to take “firm and immediate” action to end Israeli acts of aggression following the regime’s aerial assault on the Arab country.
In a statement released Thursday, the Syrian foreign ministry said the latest attack is a flagrant violation of the UN Charter and Syria’s sovereignty, official news agency SANA reported.
It came after Syrian authorities said Israeli forces had launched a barrage of missiles from the direction of the occupied Golan Height on some targets near Damascus at dawn Thursday.
The attacks, the statement said, fall within the framework of Tel Aviv’s violations and are in flagrant violation of Security Council Resolution 350 (1974) and the 1974 Disengagement of Forces Agreement between the Israeli regime and Syria.
“At about 1:38 AM today, the Israeli enemy carried out an air raid with a number of missiles from the direction of the occupied Syrian Golan, targeting some points in the vicinity of Damascus,” the source said.
“The attack by Israeli occupying forces has been in blatant violation of the Agreement on Disengagement of 1974,” the statement read.
Syria called on the UN, particularly the Security Council, to condemn the “cowardly attack and repeated hostile acts” by Israel against Syria’s sovereignty.
Elsewhere in the statement, the ministry condemned the military presence of the US and Turkey on the Syrian soil and demanded their immediate withdrawal from the Arab country.
Syrian air defenses on Thursday intercepted Israeli missiles targeting the vicinity of Damascus, in a new act of aggression that was carried out shortly after Tel Aviv said a missile fired from Syria had landed near the top-secret Dimona nuclear bomb factory.
The Israeli military said a Syrian surface-to-air missile had exploded in southern Israeli Occupied Lands and triggered warning sirens in an area close to the secretive nuclear reactor.
In response to the alleged Syrian attack, the Israeli military said it targeted several missile batteries in Syria, including the one that fired the missile.
