Breaking: Record Covid-19 deaths as pandemic shows no sign of abating

A record number of people have died of Covid-19 in the UK in the past 24 hours as the latest surge in the pandemic – driven mostly by the new coronavirus variant dubbed the “British Virus” – continues to exact a heavy human toll.

According to Press TV, in the past 24 hours a further 1,610 people have died within 28 days of testing positive for the coronavirus. In addition, a further 33,355 Covid-19 infections have been recorded in the past 24 hours.

The consistently high death toll is set to continue as the Office for National Statistics revealed that at least one in eight people in England was infected by Covid-19 in December 2020.

Reacting to the latest grim news, Dr Jenny Harries, who is deputy chief medical officer for England, suggests schools might not all reopen at the same time across England as lockdown restrictions are progressively eased.

Dr Harries told the House of Commons’ education committee on Tuesday (January 19) that there is “likely” to be “regional differences” in lockdown measures because of lack of inconsistency in infection patters across the country.

Meanwhile, the Director for Health Protection at Public Health England, Dr Yvonne Doyle, told the BBC: “Whilst there are some early signs that show our sacrifices are working, we must continue to strictly abide by the [lockdown] measures in place”.
