RU CORRESPONDENT: An abducted student of Rajshahi University (RU) has been freed from Bangladesh Chatra League (BCL) men, a student wing of ruling Awami League of the campus unit by exchanging ransom.
The incident has been taken placed on Thursday night at Shaheed Suhrawardy hall of the campus. Though university authority knew the incident, they did not take any steps on due time, sources alleged.
The victim was identified as Al Faruk, a first year student of Islamic history and culture dept and resident of Thakurgaon district. Sources said, assistant secretary of BCL and also second student of Persian Language dept Shafiur Rahman Shafi and 4th year studnt of Islamic History and Culture dept Naeem Islam allegedly abducted Faruk from a mess at Meherchondi area saying victim to introduce him with senior BCL men of the campus and tortured Faruk from 6pm to 9pm at room no.191 at Shaheed Suhrawardy hall.
Sources also said, they firstly demanded tk 50 thousands from family as ransom. Without getting any way, poor family members managed to pay tk 20 thousands. They also forced them to pay additional money but family failed to send mon]ey. However, BCL men freed Faruk from their procession around 9pmfrom the hall and also threatened him not to share the incident with anyone.
If share the incident, they will kill Faruk. However, BCL president and secretary of the campus unit came to know the incident from journalists and came on hall around 11.30pm. After investigating the incident, they found involvement of BCL men and assured victim to return the money by one day later as they apportioned the money. Assistant secretary of BCL Shafiur Rahman Shafi also acknowledged the involvement with incident after he was forced by BCL president Golam Kibria and general secretary Faisal Ahmed Runu.
It could not possible to reach to Naeem for his comment but Shafi informed that he (Naeem) was the master minder behind incident. Victim Faruk said, “Since last two days, Naeem and Shafi told me to come in the hall with them by mobile several times. As my examination is continuing, I denied going with them on the hall. On Thursday evening, they technically took me to the hall for introducing with senior BCL men.
While I reached to the guest room of the hall and asked me to come at room no. 191, then they locked to door and allegedly tortured form 6pm to 9pm alleging that I am was involved with Shibir politics. When denied the involvement, they beat me severely with iron rods and sticks.”
Following the incident, they forced me to call my family to send them tk 50 thousands as ransom; otherwise they threatened me to give me to police. And even they continued to beat me with iron rods and sticks on room. Without getting no way, I requested my father who faced vehicle accident after knowing the incident and my brother sent them tk 20 thousands by two Bkash agents number and then around 9pm, they freed me from hall”, he added. “Later, I shared the matter with our district association member and they informed the matter to the campus journalists of different media and I brief the matter to them.
Besides, my brother also informed the university proctor around 7pm thorough district association member but university proctor did not take any action though he was informed, alleged.” BCL president Golam Kibria said, “I came to know about the incident from journalists and after investigation I found involvement BCL men with the incident.
I also assured the victim to back his money by 8pm on Friday. Besides, punitive action will be taken against culprits of the incident. However, on immediate action has not taken yet. University proctors Professor Dr Luthfor Rahman “I talked with victim Faruk and with his family members on Friday mooring and I got allegation to involve with the incident and I would take legal action against them.”
If questioned to him why he did not present on due time, said, it was deep nigh that’s why he could not reach there. However, several students of the campus commended it as no legal action has been taken against BCL men by university administration.
